Whether you’re a one-man band marketing team, or a business owner juggling all of your company’s social media, it’s important you’re aware of all of the social media updates happening currently in order to thrive on all platforms.
There have been some MAJOR updates in the world of social media, and here at GNOC we want to keep you in the loop to ensure you’re getting the most out of your platforms. So, buckle up, and let’s dive into the key updates we have seen in 2025 so far.
TikTok
If you haven’t seen the news over in the USA, then where have you been? The US government set the plan to ban the app across America unless ‘ByteDance’ decided to sell the platform. TikTok owners refused to sell, and therefore the app went offline in the US on Sunday the 19th.
Within half a day, the app was back, as President Trump took office on Monday the 20th and has postponed the ban until further discussions. What will happen to TikTok in the US is still unknown, but it will more than likely have a knock-on effect on the rest of the world.
With this in mind, it is important, as a company, to consider other social media apps to focus on as well as TikTok, to ensure if the app ever did disappear, you have other ways to market your products.
In other TikTok news, you can now schedule posts (every marketer dream!).
Instagram absolutely loves a new update, and this month we have had plenty to look out for, so let’s dive into them.
- They have changed your profile grid to now be tall and vertical and it is causing a lot of discussion. It is effecting a lot of past content posted on feeds, but the aim is to focus more on reel content on Instagram.
- Highlights on your profile are moving and will now be a dedicated tab rather than a bubble on your profile.
- You can now create three-minute Reels (however Instagram suggest keeping reels between 7-15 seconds.
- There is an option to post directly to grid rather than showing in peoples feeds.
- A new CapCut competitor, called ‘Edits’ will launch with Instagram. which allows users to access a lot of creative tools to edit their videos- it has said this will be released on the 13th of March.
- They’re working on the ability to dislike comments.
Meta
Despite being ran by the same company, Facebook updates are a lot less frequent than Instagram, but as a whole Meta have a few key ones to look out for.
- Meta have recently announced they’re getting rid of ‘fact checkers’ on the platform and rely on ‘community notes’ for users.
- They have also confirmed this is only for the USA for the time being and will keep it for everywhere else.
- Community notes will NOT appear on paid ads.
- Instagram now wants to prioritise original content on the platform and will show more of the original post and less of copied content.
Other Key Updates
Instagram, Facebook and TikTok always take centre show in the updates news but let’s not forget about other key platforms. Some key updates elsewhere include:
- YouTube has no expanded three-minute Shorts to everyone.
- A new ‘TikTok’ style app called ‘RedNote’ emerged this month after the panic that TikTok would be banned, and it has been extremely popular in the US.
- Pinterest have now highlighted some key trends for 2025 in their most recent report. They have predicted colours such as ‘Cherry Red’, ‘Butter Yellow’ and ‘Aura Indigo’ will all take centre stage this year.
